Real Money. Real World.
Local schools work together with Extension Educators to help local youth realize that career choice, education, and potential lifestyle are related. Students will see firsthand how expenses for necessities, as well as luxuries, must be balanced with the reality of a monthly income.
The Real Money. Real World. program provides students with "trial run" experiences and adult spending decisions. Real Money. Real World. is planned as close to real life as possible. School officials and local Extension professionals invite community business representatives and volunteers to work a booth at the school.
Booths are set up and provide a variety of services such as banking, groceries, transportation, child care, and utilities. Students are offered career choices based on their educational aspirations and are assigned, marital status, and number of children. With monthly "paychecks" in hand, students are rquired to visite each booth to purchase goods and services. Those who spend wisely may have money left over; students who make lower salaries or make expensive purchases barely break even, or may even go bankrupt. For those who can't make ends meet, there's a financial advice booth where advice and options are offered. Students also must visit the "chance" booth where "life" deals them something unexpected. The idea is teach students that they need to plan ahead and help them realize how their educational and career aspirations will make a difference in their future. The next Real Money. Real World. program will be November 13th at Huron High School.
